Founded by Even Ehlers in 2018, Sharing Excess is a nonprofit organization in Philadelphia that saves food from going to the landfill. One event, called the "Avogeddon," involved volunteer staff distributing free 48-count cases of avocados to a long line of bicyclists, pedestrians, and drivers. Over 440,00 avocados were handed out. Another 150,000 went to local food banks. Statistics show that nearly 40 percent of food in America is wasted, equating to $408 billion in food. Sharing Excess aims to bridge the gap between businesses, wholesalers, and restaurants who have food excess to hunger relief organizations throughout the city of Philadelphia.
