26 million steps and 20,000 kilometers later, the solo adventurer Melanie Vogel will soon be finishing her hike on the Trans-Canada Trail. Once she sets foot at Point Zero, Clover Point in Victoria, she will be the first woman to make a journey from coast-to-coast on foot. Her journey, which started in Cape Spear, Newfoundland, will span nearly five years. Along the way, Vogel happened across a lab-husky, whom she named Malo, that has become a close companion for three and half years. Vogel says her journey is fueled by unexpected kindnesses along the way -- gear repairs, lodging, a sandwich, even a hug. "Those moments and the stories we shared have shown me the true soul and spirit of this country," says Vogel.
