When COVID-19 travel restrictions were in place, cattle station owners, Angus and Kimberley McKay, found it hard to find workers. They had relied heavily on traveling backpackers and not many were around anymore. Suddenly, they received a lot of applications from females, and since 2019, they have only hired women. Having an all-women crew has its benefits: for one, they are a dynamic and flexible crew, coming in to help with the children, meals, or the garden. The McKays have also noticed big savings in repairs and maintenance, $24,000 per year, in fact. "We put girls on new motorbikes at the start of the season, and by the end, the bikes are still good," he said.
