For Los Angeles Angels’ first baseman Jared Walsh, lending a helping hand is a family value learned early, through the story of how his grandmother fed a homeless person she found on her porch, instead of telling him to leave. “If Jesus comes back, he’s probably going to be dressed like that rather than driving a nice car and the fancy clothes,” she said when asked why. Walsh, a Roberto Clemente Award nominee this past season for his volunteering and charitable efforts, has made many visits to children at some local hospitals since he joined the Angels in 2019. After moving to Atlanta, he was part of his family’s community service activities. Now living in Phoenix off season, he and his fiancee seek out opportunities to volunteer there. “It’s a perspective shift,” Jared says. “If I went 0 for 4, three strikeouts the night before, I’m feeling sorry for myself and then I meet somebody who isn’t able to get out of a hospital bed on their own.”
