Some animal-lovers help other pet owners facing housing insecurity, hospitalization, or deployment. In California, Project Street Vet provides free veterinary care, treatment, and support for pets of homeless individuals, including free exams, vaccines, flea and tick medications, supplies, and even emergency help. Orazie Cook founded Praline’s Backyard in Snellville, Georgia, to give survivors of domestic abuse hope and their dogs a safe haven. The Praline’s Backyard Foundation plans to fund programs that train dogs to serve as emotional support and service dogs for survivors of domestic abuse, disabled veterans, and autistic community members. Dogs on Deployment provides service members with a national network of volunteers willing to care for their pets during service commitments.
