The Indigenous advisory circle for Banff National Park is considering welcoming visitors to the site in Indigenous languages. “We want to make sure that it’s done officially in our languages. The whole idea of inclusion and reflecting on and respecting Indigenous peoples history starts here,” said Violet Menguinis, Tsuut’ina Nation consultation director and a member of the national park’s Indigenous advisory circle. Parks Canada’s Banff field unit is supportive of the idea and there are hopes that a sign may be in place as soon as this spring. Indigenous members of the roundtable are now working with elders and knowledge keepers in their respective communities to determine how to best translate each greeting. Multiple Indigenous groups are involved with the effort; Indigenous Peoples have inhabited the area around present-day Banff for more than 10,000 years.
