The toy company, Mattel, is recognizing space scientist Dr. Maggie Aderin-Pocock and other female STEM professionals by making Barbie role model dolls in their image. Dr. Aderin-Pocock, an astronomer and new chancellor at the University of Leicester, has dedicated herself to inspiring girls to pursue careers in science. "I want to inspire the next generation of scientists, and especially girls, and let them know that STEM [science, technology, engineering and maths] is for them," she said. "These subjects are just too important to be left to the guys because through science, you can literally change the world." As a Black woman, Dr. Aderin-Pocock feels honored to be gifted a Barbie doll created in her image. "When I was little, Barbie didn't look like me, so to have one created in my likeness is mind-boggling,” she added.
