In Amsterdam a scheme to install blue and green roofs and connect them via a digital network has led to over 3 acres of blue-green roofs being installed. Climate change can lead to a heat island effect in cities which green roofs help mitigate against. They also promote wildlife and help control flooding. Also they simply look nice, adding beauty to a city. “We have a saying,” says Kaspar Spaan, policy developer for a Dutch water company, “Not on every roof everything is possible, but on every roof something is possible.”
