Dark skies are bright skies. "Adding light (to an environment) is comparable to bulldozing trees in the rainforest as far as the habitat destruction it causes," says Bettymaya Foott. With light pollution a modern-day concern, the dark sky movement certifies parks across the United States aimed at preserving the night sky. One of the parks, Rappahannock County Park, achieved IDA Dark Sky Park status in 2019. It is one of the smallest ever, being at 7.3 acres.
