Heidi Leighton, Hawkeye Fiber Optics’ most recent hire, is transforming her life and the life of her children by working as a fiber-optic ground hand. In a field traditionally dominated by men, Leighton is proving that women are just as capable. Beginning as flagger for Hawkeye, within eight months Leighton became a ground hand and is now able to 100% financially support her family. According to The Daily Yonder, Maine's Broadband Workforce Strategy report predicts that the state will have a fiber-optic workforce shortage, with the most rugged areas of America not receiving complete installation of fiber-optic cabling. Maine-based fiber-optic companies are doing everything they can to entice women in the local workforce to join them, and women are stepping up, showcasing their drive, determination and skill.
