The Brazilian government reports that deforestation in the Amazon rainforest has decreased by 33.6% during the first six months of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva's term compared to the same period in 2022 under President Bolsonaro. President Lula has made a commitment to end deforestation by 2030, but the current rate of forest loss remains a significant challenge. The area of rainforest reported to be lost under his administration is more than three times the size of New York City. Lula has enacted measures such as creating new indigenous reserves to protect these areas from mining and commercial farming. However, there is a need for further protection in other regions, according to indigenous leaders. But while deforestation has decreased, the number of fires in the Amazon has increased. Many of these fires are linked to the clearing of previously deforested areas, releasing significant amounts of carbon emissions.
