Recovery Cafes -- no-cost get-togethers in which people can have a meal with a small group of individuals who are in recovery from something -- are support groups for “whatever you’ve identified as what’s keeping you from being your truest self,” says Mike Rentfro of Terre Haute, Indiana. The cafes reduce stigma, allowing people to develop healthy, healing relationships. Rentfro is a fellow at The Reaching Rural Initiative, a year-long fellowship that supports rural practitioners from different professional backgrounds and communities working on solutions to substance use in their communities.“I really wanted to find some other people that were doing similar things,” says Jessica Perusse, from Camden in Oneida County, New York. “So not looking to my city folks for guidance, but really trying to find stuff so that we could create programming that was culturally competent to our rural community.”
