Every summer for the past 30 years, Bill and Mary-Ellen McDonald host firefly viewing parties, hoping to inspire their neighbors to consider rewilding their lawns. Experts say multiple species of fireflies are at risk of extinction from threats such as habitat loss, light pollution, and pesticides. Some people have created public spaces for the insects, which Dr. Lewis said inspired “firefly tourism.”
