You could compare building a house with straw bale to building a meal from what you’ve got in your fridge. Patagonia founder Yvon Chouinard and longtime friend architect Dylan Johnson recently joined forces to create “Home, Grown.”, a film depicting the centuries-old building practice of straw bale construction in a California suburb. This involves using straw leftover from wheat, rice, or barley crops as the main insulation and leverages locally sourced materials. It's also inexpensive and has the ability to capture a sizable amount of carbon emissions from the environment. As Chouinard says in the opening scene of the film. “…The time is now to re-imagine, not just housing, but everything else.”
