As the news cycle isn’t about to become less panic-inducing, figuring out how to consume news sanely becomes an even more critical skill for living a composed and purposeful life. The question is … how? One tactic is to stop reading the news -- but that doesn’t help unless you renounce contact with people who do follow the news. Another tactic is the ‘self-care approach’, being kind to yourself. A third option is to treat the news as something you dip into for a short while, then out of again. And when it comes to news that you do consume, balancing stories about what’s going wrong with those focused on what’s going right can help you feel empowered. Marinating in the news helps no-one, but what you’ll be doing instead -- meaningful work, keeping your community functioning, being a good-enough parent or a decent friend -- actively does help.
