Patagonia’s new Stormshadow Parka reflects how far sustainable-material innovation has come over the past few years. Its warmest-ever outerwear is weatherproof and contains no toxic forever chemicals, with half of its fibers derived from marine waste, rather than old water bottles collected through municipal recycling. Bionic hires local communities across Central America and Asia to collect plastic bottles from the ocean, then brings them to its recovery and sorting facility in Costa Rica where it works with Gore-Tex to transform them into yarn. Aiming to be a beacon to influence brands and educate customers, Patagonia has created long-term partnerships with Bionic and Gore-Tex to scale their operations so other brands also will be able to use material made from marine plastic.
