When Russia invaded Ukraine, Venya Brykalin, editor-in-chief of Vogue Ukraine, was in Milan for fashion week. But fashion has not been the magazine’s main focus since then. It has posted stories and photography on besieged Mariupol, destruction of buildings in Kharkiv, women giving birth in bomb shelters – and campaigning for luxury brands to leave Russia. When the magazine returned to print in spring 2023, it featured essays on Ukrainian heroes, and was the bestselling issue since the magazine began in 2013, with 44,000 copies printed. The summer 2023 theme was “Ukrainian youth”. Autumn 2023, with the coverline “The will to win”, has three different covers showing tennis player Elina Svitolina; fencing star Olga Kharlan, and high jump world champion Yaroslava Mahuchikh.
