The small town of Sheffield, Illinois, was about to lose its one and only supermarket - the Royal Super Mart that Cliff Winger opened in 1940 and his son John took over in the 1980s. He wanted to retire, but he didn’t want to leave the town without a grocery store. Nurse Elizabeth Pratt, who runs an NGO focused on health, volunteered to take over the store if she could raise the funds. The community -- so small it doesn’t have stop lights -- came together, and generosity moved at warp speed. Donations topped half a million, making it possible for Pratt to revamp the store, making it energy efficient, adding self checkout and cementing local access to fresh foods.
