International students are feeling the brunt of Canada’ shortage of affordable housing because most schools don’t have enough student housing. At the same time, there could be more than five million empty bedrooms in Ontario and as many as 12 million spare bedrooms across Canada. Judith Holman and her husband, Peter Gahlinger, signed up for Sparrow, an online platform that connects homeowners with spare bedrooms and renters looking for affordable and safe housing. Since July, they have been hosting 20-year-old Goodness Ade, who moved from Nigeria to Canada three years ago to study computer science at Carleton University in Ottawa. In an interview about their experiences, Judith says home sharing is a great way to bring in extra income while providing some much needed housing supply, while Goodness says it is definitely a force for good.
