Since Reno teamed with neighboring Sparks City and Washoe County to build a Nevada Cares Campus that can accommodate more than 600 people in a giant tent and satellite sleeping pods, the number of homeless living on the street has plummeted from 780 to 329. Once people are off the street, Reno helps them find a job and move into permanent housing. Now that it has sufficient beds, Reno has begun enforcing no-camping rules. Affordable housing for people is located nearby in several modular buildings, formerly part of a Wyoming seasonal-worker camp, which Reno trucked in before the pandemic and where rooms rent for $555 a month. The campus will eventually include an adjacent healthcare clinic and other ancillary homeless-care buildings.
