More than a year after 15-year-old Nethra Purushothaman launched a petition against her own Girl Scouts council, she has helped save one of the most biologically diverse habitats in Prince George's county. The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission bought Marlton forest for $12.6 million and will add it to Charles Branch Stream Valley Park. Nethra launched the petition in November 2022, when she heard her Girl Scouts council was considering selling the forest to developers, and it got more than 3,500 signatures. The Girl Scouts Nation's Capital said the money from the sale will support a new fund that will help purchase adaptive outdoor equipment such as tents for girls in wheelchairs, provide training to help neurodiverse campers and offer mental health resources and more scholarships for campers.
