South Australian politician Emily Bourke, now Australia’s first assistant minister for autism, didn’t realize it was a world first when her state government created an Office for Autism a year ago. Even as the federal government finalizes its new autism strategy, she is working to get an autism inclusion teacher into every public primary school and has persuaded all four universities to introduce new modules on autism, disability and inclusion in teacher training. Her “Autism Works” campaign guides employers on best practice in making their environments more accommodating.
