Nantucket island, where the rich and famous summer, is also known for giving away homes for free, as long as you move them. Any home with "reuse potential" must be advertised in the town paper for 30 days. About a decade ago, there were only 19 permits for moves but in 2022, 91 permits were issued by October. Fire and police must sign off on the permits, and roads must be closed. Buyers of the "free" homes include homeowners looking for a small rental property; individuals or young families who have land but can’t afford to build a new house; and housing nonprofits that turn them into affordable housing for the local workforce and low-income families. Since 1994, Housing Nantucket has repurposed 39 "free" homes into income-capped rentals, and more than 600 families are on the list.
