Solar eclipse glasses can be recycled or donated after the eclipse. Because most eclipse glasses are made out of cardboard, the arms can be recycled so long as the lenses are thrown out. Since 2008, Astronomers Without Borders has collected gently-used eclipse glasses from the US and Canada and redistributed them to people in other countries for upcoming eclipses. Eclipse Glasses USA’s Give Back program takes used glasses that do not have any scratches, punctures, tears, or other damage and will send them to schools in Latin America so that children will be able to view the October 2024 annular eclipse.
