More than 22,000 guns collected by Belgian police have been melted down into 60 tons of recycled steel, after a covert three-day operation to transport the guns to a steel plant in Ghent. Half the guns came from owners or people who had inherited them but no longer wanted them; the other half were outdated police weapons. It was the third time Belgian security forces have cooperated with steel giant ArcelorMittal to destroy firearms.
