This Used to Be a Synagogue is a Twitter account that regularly posts photographs of street views in Manhattan and the address and name of synagogues that used to be there. Texas undergraduate Amy Shreeve started it as a project in 'commemorative geography' using a public database with names and addresses of past and present Manhattan synagogues and Jewish organizations. She geocoded a Twitter bot to post Google Streetview photographs of those places today. A descendant of Mormon pioneer immigrants and Irish famine immigrants, she became fascinated by Jewish history after taking a Yiddish language class at the University of Texas in Austin.
