"I had never had the opportunity to access education," said Harekala Hajabba, a 68-year-old orange seller in Mangalore, India. "And I did not want the children in the village to suffer the same fate." In 2000, Hajabba decided to invest all his life savings to start a school in his village of Newpadapu after an incident when he could not tell foreign tourists the prices of fruits he was selling. Having received no formal education, he wanted generations of children in his hometown to be raised with better conditions.
