Ron King was a successful New York media executive when he saw a TikTok video about a herd of donkeys rescued from slaughter and learned that the global donkey population is being “decimated”, with most hides sent to China. King pitched the idea of a sanctuary to Phil Selway, who owned a 75-acre property in California. Oscar’s Place Adoption Center and Sanctuary has cared for 77 donkeys so far, and 23 of them have found new homes. All Seated in a Barn, an equine rescue, also finds animals at auctions and cares for them until they are well enough to go to Oscar’s Place. “Every single person who comes here says they leave transformed,” says King.
