Conservation authorities in Cambodia released 51 critically endangered southern river Terrapin turtles into the country's Sre Ambel river last November. The program is part of wider efforts to bring back a species that was previously thought to be extinct in Cambodia. The Terrapin, known locally as the royal turtle, was historically hunted as a delicacy, but is also threatened by habitat loss due to deforestation. Since 2015, scientists have released a total of 147 Terrapins. The latest 51 were microchipped and tagged so their behavior in the wild can be tracked.
