In a Ukrainian city bombarded by Russia, five musicians brought their instruments underground, using their violins, cello and bass to drown out explosions for hundreds of all ages taking shelter in the subway. After the conflict halted plans for the Kharkiv Music Fest, an annual international classical music festival usually held in the Kharkiv Philharmonic's grand hall, the organizers descended into a subway station and a business's basement. The "concert between explosions" started with the Ukrainian national anthem and included the music of Bach and Dvorak and Ukrainian folk songs. Fest director Sergiy Politutchy said the underground concert showed that "amid the darkness there are eternal values and a future in our country," proving that "our country is melodious, beautiful, intellectual and will overcome all these difficulties."
