Some of the world's biggest tech and consulting companies have pledged to buy nearly $1 billion of permanent carbon removal between 2022 and 2030. This will supercharge demand for captured carbon dioxide stored underground. The funds will be allocated by Frontier, a not-for-profit corporation owned by Stripe, and funded by Stripe, Alphabet, Shopify, Meta, and McKinsey. The advance market commitment strategy was inspired by a 2007 AMC that created a pneumococcal vaccine, saving 700,000 people. Not preselecting winners is key. Infusing money into the ecosystem so that a wide range of companies can grow means newer methods can emerge and existing methods can become more efficient over time.
