Scotland's government has become the first in the world to make period products free. Under the Period Products Act, schools, colleges, universities as well as local government bodies must make a range of period products available for free in public bathrooms. Since 2017, the Scottish government has already invested millions of pounds to fund free period products in educational settings, but the law now makes it a legal requirement. "Providing access to free period products is fundamental to equality and dignity, and removes the financial barriers to accessing them," said Scottish Social Justice Secretary Shona Robison. The bill, which passed unanimously, was introduced by Scottish parliament lawmaker Monica Lennon.
