What to do with all those takeaway food boxes? Lithuanian consumers have a solution. Kaunas University of Technology researchers, business and citizens worked with packaging experts and a local restaurant to fix the shortcomings of ordinary takeaway packaging. Participants wanted a package in which food, prepared in a slow, nutrient-saving way, could be easily heated at home while still in its package. Collaborative efforts yielded a cardboard covered with a special lightweight, non-flammable material, with adapted inserts to easily adjust the box size and separate the food. Boxes come in three sizes and easily fit into each other to save space. A special sleeve holds them in place. Clear instructions printed on the packages explain how long and at what temperature they can be heated, and how they must be recycled. A supportive frame prevents the lid from buckling and ruining the view of a meal.
