Texan Robert Youens had decided to end his planned trip through the Northwest Passage at Cambridge Bay after patching an 18-inch hole in his 16-foot boat, when he realized he was in trouble, 240 kilometers from the nearest community, Kugluktuk. The repair had pulled apart and the tear was getting worse, but somehow he made it. Myles Pedersen, who met Youens when he stopped in Kugluktuk on his journey east to Pond Inlet in Nunavut, spent the next week working with Kevin Ongahak and Robin Paco Ilgok to turn the boat into an 'icebreaker' so Youens could make it back to Tuktoyaktuk. "Guys, I love you guys," said Youens, 68, who lives in Austin, Texas. "You sent me off 100 per cent ready to go with my boat better than I could have ever imagined." Pedersen said it's just one of those things people do in small communities."He was all alone. Boat was broken. I knew how to fix it, so I told him I'd fix it for him."
