Modhera in Gujarat state is India's first solar-powered village, with solar and rooftop panels over 30 acres providing more energy than village residents use each day. The $9.7 million project includes a ground-mounted 6-megawatt project, 15-megawatt battery storage system and one-kilowatt rooftops installed on 1,300 houses. Farmer Gadvi Kailashben says her electricity bill is now zero because everything in her house, from refrigerator to washing machine, now runs on solar. "We work in our farm and used to pay huge electricity bills for agriculture," says Ashaben Mahendrabhai. "Earlier our electricity bill used to come around 2,000 rupees. Now it is in minus." The Sun Temple of Modhera, built a thousand years ago, is now completely powered by solar energy, including a 3D light show, and its parking area has electric vehicle charging stations.
