Across the United States, landfills are being repurposed as solar farms. Because landfill conditions render them unsafe for the environment, urban developers are finding other ways to make use of the land. Currently, there are 113 landfills that have been repurposed into solar farms, collectively creating around 428 megawatts in solar energy. Another 4,000 landfills across the U.S. were identified from research studies as having potential to be repurposed. Altogether, such projects could generate enough power to power 7.8 million homes annually.
