Toledo City Council of Ohio, U.S., passed a new proposal that is expected to forgive up to $240 million in medical debt. The plan was encouraged after seeing cities such as Chicago working to erase medical debt for its residents. Funding for the proposal came from the Covid-19 Stimulus Package as well as contributions from Lucas County. "I hope it’ll help give people the boost they need to go back to the doctor, to pay their rent or mortgage," said councilperson Dr. Michele Grim.
