Princess Fiona, a 7-year-old, 48-pound pit bull mix with Cushing’s disease, had been at Washington’s Humane Rescue Alliance shelter for 119 days when Monica Whitaker and her daughter came to look for a cat at the nearby PetSmart. Five-year-old Myanni petted and fed the dog and quickly asked a volunteer, “Do you take Cash App or card?” Whitaker quickly fell in love with Princess Fiona, too. Hearing the dog's story, Whitaker thought about how she’d had to battle for her 19-year-old son - injured in a bicycle crash as a 6-year-old - to be treated like the other kids. The adoption was a done deal. At home, Whitaker’s oldest son is the first one to take Princess Fiona out every morning, put her on the couch and wrap her in his sister’s unicorn blanket. Within days, Whitaker would swear that Princess Fiona’s belly was already becoming less bloated.
