Rather than training to represent Ukraine at the Olympics, professional skater Yurii Korotun has been teaching young Ukrainian refugees living in Hall 27 of Hanover’s trade exhibition grounds since early April. For five hours a day, twice a week, young refugees can once again be physically and mentally active as they learn to skateboard. Hanover’s indoor skatepark, Gleis D Skatehalle, which helps with the program, also organized a humanitarian convoy in August to deliver skate equipment to Ukraine. Participants of Cargo Mission traveled by van from Berlin, Germany, to Lviv, Ukraine, accompanied by Gabriel Goldsack, founder of the nonprofit Share a Bike/Share a Smile, and distributed 74 skateboards, nine BMX bikes, and spare parts in Lviv and other cities impacted by the Russian offensives.
