Solar power has become a popular energy source. However, solar farms on land can take up a lot of space that could be used for farming and housing. And sometimes, electricity is needed in remote locations. One answer are floating solar farms - solar panels that are installed on the surface of waters, like lakes and reservoirs. Now, scientists are also looking to oceans. One hurdle they have to overcome is the roughness of waves, which can destroy solar panels .One research team is developing a floating breakwater system to reduce the height of waves by 90 %. The best solution may be to keep the floating solar farms near the shore where the sea is not as rough.
