Until recently, diabetes treatment for cats has been daunting: twice-daily injections of insulin, an implanted monitor and frequent visits to the vet. Now, a once-daily pill brings change and relief for newly-diagnosed cats and their human caretakers. In studies, the pill improved glucose control and reduced at least one diabetes symptom. But some cats in the study also died or had to be euthanized, prompting a black-box warning about side effects. Because of that, the pill can only be prescribed to newly diagnosed cats. Still the progress is promising and will provide an alternative treatment option for diabetic cats.
