Identical twins Amber Kilgore and Yarrow Young of the Little Traverse Bay Band of Odawa Indians learned to make gluten-free cupcakes because both have celiac disease and a sweet tooth. But it wasn’t til 2021, both pregnant and working full time with toddlers at home, that they began selling their Tootsie Bluffins cupcakes at the Harbor Springs Farms Market in northern Michigan. After selling 250-300 cupcakes each weekend that first season, they decided to turn it into a full-time business. It was their grandmother, Harriet Kishigo Booth, who taught them how to bake. She owned a baking business, and was part of a group of Little Traverse Bay Band tribal citizens who successfully testified for recognition before Congress in 1994.
