The youth-led House of Hope in Tuktoyaktuk, located on Canada's Arctic coast, has transformed the hamlet of 940 by giving people a place to meet, says Nathan Kuptana. He helped establish it after four young people died by suicide last year. With peer pressure, alcohol and drugs affecting the community's young people, they need a space of their own, says elder and former teacher Betty Elias. "We are there to listen, and maybe offer some help. Listening is a real big thing, too, because a lot of times they're not heard." Sewing instructors Charmaine Teddy and Catherine Mangelana teach sewing classes at the school, an idea that came from youth.
