A few years ago, 10-year-old Patrick Kaufmann and friends made 30 valentine cards to tuck inside home-delivery meal packages sent to sick children and adults by Food and Friends, a Washington, D.C. food nonprofit. In the fall of 2020, students at his school made 300 valentines, and in 2022, students at several area schools made more than 3,000. This year, students at 62 schools in D.C., Maryland and Virginia created 16,000 valentines.. Patrick personally recruits the classrooms that volunteer. Delivery drivers pick up the cards and take them to about 60 organizations. His website, Valentines by Kids, encourages everyone to cut out colorful hearts and write messages of kindness.
