As natural disasters become more frequent, community land trusts are becoming increasingly popular ways to ensure community control, stave off displacement and ensure long-term affordability when rebuilding. The US has more than 225 CLTs and an estimated 12,000 CLTs housing units. They include 27 nearly-finished cottages still standing on Big Pine Key after Hurricane Ian, being built by the Florida Keys Community Land Trust. In Texas, the Houston Community Land Trust -- formed after Hurricane Harvey caused $180 billion in damages -- has provided nearly 100 families with subsidies toward market-rate homes since 2018. In Medford, Oregon, New Spirit Village will boast 84 affordable, energy efficient and fire-resistant homes for families who lost their homes in the 2020 Alameda Wildfire. Near Seattle, the Homestead Community Land Trust completed a dozen zero-energy, three and four-bedroom townhomes last year, and 16 homes opened at a separate development in the Leschi neighborhood last summer.
