The European Parliament has adopted a ban on the sale of new fossil-fueled cars and light vehicles by 2035. The decision formalizes an agreement between the European Parliament and European Council in 2022 to lower EU greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% by 2030, contributing to the EU’s goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. The rule also requires that new cars sold in the EU lower emissions to 55% of 2021 levels by 2030, and vans reduce emissions by 50% by the same year. The bill was approved by a vote of 340 to 279, with 21 abstentions. The final bill allows automakers producing less than 10,000 vehicles per year to negotiate for lower emissions reduction targets through 2036. The new law does not apply to larger vehicles such as lorries and buses, but the European Commission announced new standards for cutting emissions from these vehicles.
