An animal sanctuary in California rescued 1,000 hens from being euthanized at an Iowa egg farm. The egg farm has been struggling due to the pandemic and had made the decision to euthanize 100,000 chickens, but when Animal Place reached out to save 1,000 of the chickens, they were happy to oblige. Many farmers have had to downscale recently, as they've been unable to sell their products as efficiently as before. The animal sanctuary chartered two private planes paid for by a donor, and had two of their employees drive 30 hours to oversee the rescue. The hens are now safe in California free to move around in Animal Place's sanctuary after being cooped up in wire cages for most of their lives. They will be available for adoption for backyard flocks once they are in good health again.
