Nirmala Werner and her family—her husband Lukas, her daughter Jyoti, and her son Petur—made an 801-kilometer pilgrimage on foot from Istanbul to Konya, the grave of the Sufi poet Rumi. Their journey was filled with the kindness of strangers: offerings of filled pancakes, lodging, and meals. They traveled light, without a tent, the beauty of the night sky accompanying them throughout the 40 days and 40 nights of their pilgrimage. "Walking through nature," writes Nirmala, "having so little with us, being close to animals, to life itself, started a shift in consciousness of our family and gifted us with a rich and healing time."
