An all-female leadership team is behind a unique project in British Columbia that will provide affordable, long-term housing for women. Soroptimist International of Vancouver is redeveloping its site with a 135-unit, 13-floor tower because Vancouver lacks affordable housing, especially for women and those seeking escape from gender-based violence. “It’s the only project in North America that’s providing housing for women by an all-woman team,” says CEO Carla Guerrera, CEO of Purpose Driven Development. Most units will be apartments for single mothers with children and senior women but some will be for geared-to-market rental units for women in the workforce. “Metro Vancouver has the highest rents and lowest vacancy rates of any region in Canada,” says SI Vancouver board president Carla Busnardo. “The lack of housing options places women at greater risk of returning to or staying in an abusive situation. The housing crisis also makes women vulnerable to exploitation.”
