Saved by an angel? When mother of two Claudia Jimenez woke up one Thursday morning, she found flames ripping through her apartment and the front door blocked by the blaze. She made a call to the firefighters and opened her window to ask for help. And help did come – in the form of Joe Hollins, a homeless man, camped out nearby. Hollis, who had been alerted by the screams, immediately got under the window, and told Jimenez to drop her two children to him. One-year-old Valerie went first, then eight-year-old Natalie, followed by the family's two dogs. Hollis safely caught each one of them, and then encouraged Jimenez to jump too. "I will forever be thankful to him, you know? Like I said, to me he was an angel," Jiminez said. "Because of him we're here, we're alive and my daughters are safe." As for Hollins, he wouldn't listen to the praise, saying that anyone would do the same. Despite the happy ending, Jimenez and her children, like many other residents of the building, lost everything in the fire, so community members are now raising money to support the survivors.
